Moving Out

September 23, 2008 By: ScottK Category: personal No Comments →

So far we’ve stayed in this really nice rental house for a little over a year. It’s been great but time to down-grade a little bit. Abra is 18 and continously tell us she is moving out with her friends. Not sure how’s she’s going to do that since she doesn’t have a job.

So the decision was made and we found a sweet deal for a 3/2 with a 1/1 duplex for only 1600.00 a month. That would give Abra her own pad which we could sub-lease (and we currently have takers) if she decides to go.

Seriously though, we currently pay 1600.00 a month in rent, not including the utilites. Electric in this big old house costs like 500.00 a month. Add to the budget another 200.00 for water/sewer and gas; it’s really a move of necessity.

So alas moving to a smaller home, *sniff* I will miss my office *sniff* will ultimately mean Rai and I can spend more on time with the kids.

The horrible thing about this is that I have a prject due to go live Oct 1. Which means I’m booked solid on work until then. We can’t move in until October 1 and we need to be out by Oct. 1. Do you see the collision that’s going to happen?

Granted, with this years economy, and until we finally elect a new president, it’s more of an opportunity to save. That’s the way I see it. Abra of course is fine with the move. Kel and Donovan are fine with it. I’m a bit worried that Kel’s room will be too small.

She’s such a good girl though: much like me she will take to the change.

So Glad IZEAFest is Over With!

Now don’t get me wrong, IZEAFest was a big event for me. Just a long road to get there. I’ve spent the last three months working day/nights/weekends coding a new feature for IZEAFest only to have it pulled at the last minutes because the QA department got backed testing other projects. Although extremely dis-apointed in this decision I do understand it. It just sucks.

However as IZEAFest came around Rai and I did have a great time.

Thursday was of course the meet and greet. I got to see our friends from last year Cass, Colleen, and Heather. Plus got to meet a few other friends as well. The meet/greet was alright. Such that I seem to be always on the job, made a new contact for the sales department and talked to a few advertisers about how to help them with social media. All in all not a bad evening.

Friday was all about trying to help out the event. Although I was only supposed to be a floater for half the day I stuck around the whole day pitching in as needed. Since none of my code was going to be deployed for the “big” event I felt I wasn’t needed for the deploy. Paid off as other dev’s got called away so I got to help run the sound board. Just doing my part I guess.

Even though the request was in that we attend IZEAFest I didn’t go Saturday. Idid learn a lot of great stuff on Friday and the live video feed I choose to stay home Saturday and work on an interface for my project. Although I couldn’t help tuning in and listening to the widgets/plugins panels. That was a mistake.

All they wanted to talk about was “What widgets and plugins” they used. Please, I wanted to hear some meat. How do you qualify a widget/plugin? How do you handle security? I logged into the chat room for the event and became very active in the discussions.

Saturday night after the party however I was an IZEAHunt team captain. After a little team shuffling we got started. I really was awesome. I say that as I didn’t have to get all dirty this time. Rai was on my team and she enjoyed it. I had to other poeple on my team and they were awesome as well. They found it amazing that just a simple little contest like this would bring out the fun. Never did either of the two think that the other would do something like this.

With the input of the IZEAFest conference I have sorta redesigned by blog. Still a work in progress but looks a lot better than it did. After four months of working nearly non-stop I think I’ll just go watch a movie, or really anything a way from a computer at the moment. ;)

Happy Day to All Fathers

June 15, 2008 By: ScottK Category: personal No Comments →

I’ve spent another weekend writing code on my off time. It’s a bad habit of mine that I understand. truthfully if I could find the key that brings the whole family together in what they want to do and have fun I would certainly throw the computer in the lake and be with the family. That being said we are all fine with doing what we want and need to.

Kel did give me a Father’s day present of her name in Egyptian Hieroglyphics and that was very cool.

While I punch away at the keys I can only keep in mind this one poem by and anonymous author:

What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle’s flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,

He called it … Dad

Wishing you and your’s a Happy Fathers Day.
